Local Educational Agency Homeless Plan

The LEA identified homeless student will be immediately enrolled in school, eliminating delays caused by lack of records or other enrollment requirements. The shall ensure that each child of a homeless individual and each homeless youth has equal access to the same free, appropriate public education provided to other children. Homeless students will not be separated from the mainstream school environment. Homeless children have an opportunity to meet the same challenging State student academic achievement standards to which all students are held.

The LEA shall coordinate with local social service agencies such as the office of Child Services (OCS), Housing and Urban Development (HUT)), and other agencies that is, community churches, civil leagues, and health care services in providing service for the homeless. Head Start has homeless preschoolers as a targeted population to be served. A child who is homeless and attending any school in the LEA is eligible for Title I services. This includes schoolwide Title I programs and non-Title I schools. Under the Individual with Disabilities Act (IDEA), the LEA has a policy and procedures to identify, locate, and serve students. The Child Find component in IDEA includes identifying unserved children with disabilities who are homeless. The LEA liaison will work collaborative with the homeless and any agency needed to eliminate barriers and provide services for public education.

Additionally, the LEA provides school supplies for the homeless. Any educational field trip opportunities that a school schedules will be afforded to the homeless student through a Title X application.

The LEA has organized a uniform bank for homeless and needy students. The uniform bank is a joint effort involving the community and the school. Uniform are donated by families in the community, business, and organizations. The two local cleaners/laundries have agreed to do the initial cleaning for used uniforms. Parents of applicants for uniforms which is submitted to the District Parental Involvement Coordinator and approved by the homeless LEA liaison person.

The LEA homeless liaison will serve students in homeless situations by providing to improve or maintain good health, to ensure that the homeless students have equal and appreciate public education.
